The modern aviation industry is optimised for speed. However, this historical and on-going prioritisation has resulted in a lack of investment in persistent capabilities across the air domain. Fast aircraft are increasingly shoehorned into roles they were not designed for, most notably long-duration surveillance.
Airships lifted by buoyancy gas are naturally suited to these types of missions. Able to operate for days, weeks and even months, they provide a continuous presence over coastlines, remote regions and key points of interest that would otherwise be costly for conventional aircraft. Used correctly, airships enable faster platforms to be employed more selectively and conservatively.
